Chord Tensions Aren't Chord Tones

9, 11, and 13 are the same scale tones as 2, 4, and 6 — just moved up an octave and layered on as color. They don't decide whether a chord is major, minor, or dominant the way the 3rd, 5th, and 7th do.


Stack a chord in thirds — 1, 3, 5, 7 — and each of those four notes has a specific job. The 3rd sets major or minor, the 7th sets whether the chord pulls like a dominant, and together they're the two guide tones that define the chord's identity. Adding a 9th, 11th, or 13th on top never touches that vote.

Why the octave matters: A bare 2nd sitting a whole step above the root clashes badly with it. Move that same note up an octave — now it's a 9th — and the interval against the root widens to a major 9th, which reads as color instead of a clash. That's the whole trick behind why tensions are written up an octave rather than as their plain scale-degree number.

So on a lead sheet, Cmaj9 is still just a C major chord (1-3-5-7 = C-E-G-B) with a 9th (D) floating on top — not a different chord family. Learn to see the 1-3-5-7 first, then treat anything past the 7th as seasoning you can add, thin out, or drop entirely depending on how busy the arrangement already is.
